No, no, no, no, no

Apparently Sen. Lamar Alexander has introduced some sort of resolution that says the national anthem should only be sung in English.

The national athem should, at public events, be sung in English, but no laws should be passed demanding it. The national anthem can, as far as I'm concerned, be sung in any language anyone wants to sing it in as long as the meaning of the lyrics is true to the original. Otherwise, it should not be called "the" or "a" national anthem, at least not for the United States of America.

I suppose if a "resolution" means a "non-binding statement" -- as it seems to with the U.N. ... well, as long as it only means "we think it should be sung in English" -- I'll go along with it. But no laws, please. The first amendment doesn't need to be stomped on to drive the point home.
